Summary: This book is the start of a trilogy, set on a Pacific island in a future time, after the world has been thrown into chaos by a solar flare. A cruise ship which had been grounded in the main lagoon of the island becomes a sanctuary for the island's inhabitants and is the setting for much of the action. The story is told from the point of view of a young woman, Maryam, who moves from her idyllic childhood on the island to an unexpectedly horrible new life on the ship, when she makes the crossing from childhood to womanhood. Once she realises the truth of her new existence she makes some tough decisions.

Review:

This book makes you want to keep reading it, as the action keeps churning on, and at the end I wanted to read on to find out what happened next, so I requested the sequel (Into the Wilderness).  The style is unfussy and easy to read and I recommend it to anyone who likes a good adventure story, and doesn't get queasy about sickness and a bit of blood.
