Manukau Research Library and City Centre Library are relocating to a new shared site adjacent to Manukau Square.
The move will bring greater visibility for the Research Library as well as a more accessible space for the City Centre Library and its customers.
The new combined Manukau Library and Research Centre is expected to be completed by early 2011.
Following council and the Auckland Transition Agency approval the lease was secured late last year for the building located at 3 Osterley Way. Concept drawings have been prepared and meetings held with key stakeholders, including customers, to review the designs.
Director of Community Ian Maxwell is excited about the project. “The new site will provide customers with a brighter and more attractive library and bring more foot traffic into the square.
“The long-term aim is a centre that is attractive, well used, safe and lively both day and night, is easy to get around, with a strong focus on people and the environment and reflects the heritage of the area.
“The library, along with the new railway station and tertiary campus, will be a key part of the city centre redevelopment. “
The library relocation is one of a number of projects underway as part of plans to invest in and develop Manukau city centre.
