Celebrate Diwali with Manukau Libraries

6/10/2009

This month Papatoetoe, Manurewa and Otara Library will celebrate Diwali, one of the most exciting and vibrant events on the Indian calendar.

Indian costume demonstrations, a jewellery workshop, sweet making, samosa demonstrations and tastings, henna painting and dancing are just some of the colourful unique aspects of Indian and South Asian culture on offer.

Libraries Outreach Coordinator Community Cultures Paulo Va’a says, “Our Diwali celebrations are a great way for the Indian community to share some of its culture with the rest of the city.

“I also encourage our customers, in particular our Indian community, to visit Papatoetoe Library and view their collection of Hindi and Punjabi books."

During the week-long celebrations both libraries will be holding children’s Diwali storytimes.  There will also be a colouring competition and quiz competitions running throughout the week with lots of prizes up for grabs.
