The origins of the Otara Market

Bruce Ringer

The Otara Market has long been an icon of the Otara community. The market is held each Saturday morning in the Otara Town Centre car park, and is renowned for its vitality and cultural diversity. It offers ethnic foods, arts and crafts, jewellery, fashion and fresh produce, along with entertainment and live music.

The Otara market is one of Auckland’s oldest community markets. Its origins date back to 1976, to the early days of Te Puke O Tara community centre, and it has been held on a regular basis since August 1977. Despite its longevity and success, its history has not been without controversy, and its survival on several occasions has been uncertain.
