The South Auckland Research Centre aims to acquire all significant publications on New Zealand history, society, arts and the environment. Its collections include:
- Most standard New Zealand reference titles, including atlases, encyclopaedias, directories, bibliographies, almanacs and subject guides.
- An extensive collection of books and periodicals on all aspects of New Zealand history, society, literature, arts and the environment.
- Most New Zealand Government publications of current and historical interest, including sets of the Appendix to the Journals of the House of Representatives, the New Zealand Gazette and New Zealand Parliamentary Debates (Hansard).

- A selection of major New Zealand legal resources, including statutes and statutory regulations, the multi-volume commentary Laws of New Zealand, and a range of legal guides and textbooks.

- Most major New Zealand statistical publications, including complete sets of volumes from recent censuses, the New Zealand Official Yearbook from 1893 to the present day, current subscriptions to important statistical periodicals, and a wide range of monthly, annual or occasional topical statistical publications.
- A selection of New Zealand standards.
Books held by the Research Centre are listed in the Auckland Libraries' catalogue. For information on holdings of serials, please contact reference staff. Items which the Research Centre does not hold can often be obtained via interloan.
