Library glossary.

  • Catalogue: A complete, searchable list of the resources found in Manukau Libraries. Searching the library catalogue
  • Check ins: Items that are returned to the library
  • Check outs: Items that have been borrowed
  • Database: A collection of information on a particular subject or subjects eg the community information database is a collection of contact details for thousands of Manukau City sports clubs, community groups and charitable organisations.   • Dewey: A system used by many libraries, including Manukau Libraries, to organise non-fiction items. More about the Dewey system
  • E-Resource: A database that can be searched using a computer.
  • Electronic resources: A term that encompasses a number of different resources e.g. the catalogue, community information database, E-Resources and the internet
  • Email: A means of communicating with people using the internet
  • ESOL: Abbreviation for English for Speakers of Other Languages
  • Fiction: Literature describing imaginary events and people; novels and short stories
  • Internet: Also called "the web", "world wide web" or "the net". A means of searching for information and communicating with people around the world
  • Items: Used to collectively describe the different types of resources found in a library eg books, videos, audiocassettes, audio books, books on tape, magazines, puzzles and games, music cds, and cd-roms. Used interchangeably with 'resources'
  • Non-fiction: Items that contain factual information
  • Reference: Items that are for use in the library only. They cannot be borrowed
  • Renew: Extend the borrowing period of an item you have out
  • Request: To ask for an item to be sent to your local library for you to pick up. How to request items from the library catalogue
