New Zealand family history.

The Manukau Research Library specialises in New Zealand resources. (Overseas family history resources are mostly restricted to guides and manuals.)

New Zealand resources include:

  • Standard New Zealand genealogical and family history guides
  • The New Zealand Herald on microfilm from 1863 onwards. (Microfilms of other major New Zealand newspapers can sometimes be obtained via interloan)
  • Births deaths and marriage indexes on microfiche from 1840 to 1990
  • New Zealand electoral rolls on microfiche from 1853 to 1981
  • A selection of New Zealand provincial business directories on microfiche between 1856 and 1956
  • New Zealand cemetery transcriptions on microfiche
  • A wide range of other microfiche resources
  • A range of local and family histories
  • Major New Zealand Government publications of historical interest.
Items which Manukau Libraries does not hold can usually be obtained via interloan.

Two microfilm reader-printers and five microfiche readers are available for public use. The microfilm readers can print copies from both microfilm and microfiche. It is advisable to book the microfilm readers. Bookings can be made for an hour at a time.

Research Library staff can advise on the availability and use of resources but are unable to undertake family history research. Keen family historians may wish to join the New Zealand Society of Genealogists.

An increasing number of family history resources are available on the Internet. You can link to them from the following pages:
